Born in Key West, FL while his father was in the Navy, Fr. John moved with his parents to Harrah, Oklahoma when he was eight weeks old. Of Ukrainian Orthodox heritage on his father’s side, he is the third generation born of his family that has been in the Harrah area since before statehood. On his mother’s side he is of Scots-Irish/Southern descent. That side of the family has been in America since about the time of the Revolution.
Under the guidance of his paternal grandparents, Fr. John converted to the Orthodox Church from the Southern Baptist Church when he was fifteen years old.
Upon graduation from Harrah High School, Fr. John enrolled at the University of Central Oklahoma from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in music. In 1986 Fr. John went on to St. Vladimir’s Seminary in New York where he earned the degree of Master of Divinity. After graduating from seminary he taught at St. Herman Seminary in Kodiak, Alaska for two years.
Fr. John was ordained to the priesthood in 1994, at St. Seraphim of Sarov Cathedral in Dallas, Texas by Archbishop Dmitri of Dallas from whence he served missions in Bradenton, Florida; Houston, Texas; Alpine, Texas; Georgetown, Texas; and Clovis, New Mexico.
In 2018, Fr. John was canonically received into ROCOR by Archbishop Peter of the Diocese of Chicago & the Midwest and was attached as Associate Priest at St. Benedict Orthodox Church in Oklahoma. He was elevated to the rank of Archpriest in 2010.
